Go forth, O Christian soul, out of this world, in the name of God the Father almighty, who created thee; in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who suffered for thee; in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon thee;

in the name of the Angels and Archangels; in the name of the Thrones and Dominions; in the name of the Principalities and Powers; in the name of the Cherubim and Seraphim; in the name of the Patriarchs and Prophets; in the name of the holy Apostles and Evangelists; in the name of the holy Martyrs and Confessors; in the name of the holy Monks and Hermits; in the name of the holy Virgins and of all the Saints of God:

may thy place be this day in peace, and thy abode in holy Sion. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer History

Listen to Prayer History

The Proficiscere is the climax of the Church’s commendation of the dying — the great prayer of departure, spoken over a soul at the very moment it leaves the body. Its first word is a command of holy confidence: Proficíscere — "Go forth," "Set out." Death, for the Christian, is not a falling but a going forth, a journey begun; and the Church speeds the soul on its way with the most solemn escort words she possesses.

The prayer sends the soul out "in the name" of the whole of heaven. First in the name of the Holy Trinity — the Father "who created thee," the Son "who suffered for thee," the Holy Spirit "who was poured out upon thee" — the very Name in which the soul was baptized is now the Name in which it dies. Then it invokes, rank upon rank, the entire heavenly host — Angels and Archangels, Thrones and Dominions, Principalities and Powers, Cherubim and Seraphim (eight of the nine choirs) — and every order of the saints — Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Monks, Hermits, and Virgins. The dying Christian is committed to the care of all of them at once.

It ends with the soul’s destination named in hope: "may thy place be this day in peace, and thy abode in holy Sion" — the heavenly Jerusalem, "the city of the living God" (Hebrews 12:22). This prayer so moved Blessed John Henry Newman that he built his poem The Dream of Gerontius (1865) around it — the soul of Gerontius sent forth by these very words — and Sir Edward Elgar set it to music that carried the prayer to the whole world.

💡 Did You Know?

The prayer’s first word, Proficiscere, means "Go forth" or "Set out" — the Church sees Christian death not as a falling asleep only but as a journey begun toward God.
It sends the soul out in the name of the Holy Trinity in whom it was baptized: the Father who created it, the Son who suffered for it, and the Spirit who was poured out upon it.
The prayer summons the angelic host rank upon rank — Angels and Archangels, Thrones and Dominions, Principalities and Powers, Cherubim and Seraphim — eight of the nine traditional choirs (only the Virtues are not named), summoning heaven itself to escort the soul.
It then invokes every order of the saints — Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Monks, Hermits, and Virgins — so the soul departs accompanied by the whole Church triumphant.
Its destination, "holy Sion," is the heavenly Jerusalem, "the city of the living God… and the company of many thousands of angels" (Hebrews 12:22).
Blessed John Henry Newman built his 1865 poem The Dream of Gerontius around this prayer, following a soul from its deathbed through judgment toward God.
Sir Edward Elgar set Newman’s poem to music in 1900, making the Proficiscere one of the most widely heard of all the Church’s prayers for the dying.
