Prayers of the Catholic Church
From the catacombs of ancient Rome to the great cathedrals of medieval Christendom, the Catholic Church has woven a treasury of prayer unlike anything the world has known. The earliest Christians cried out Sub Tuum Praesidium — “Beneath thy protection” — to the Blessed Virgin as early as the third century. St. Thomas Aquinas composed prayers of such theological precision and devotional beauty that they remain in daily use seven centuries later. The Rosary, born from the simplicity of counting Hail Marys on knotted cord, became the most prayed devotion in the history of the Church.
This treasury spans every form of address to God: the solemn litanies chanted in procession, the quiet morning offering whispered at dawn, the great hymns of the Mass — Gloria in Excelsis Deo, Credo, Sanctus — that have lifted the hearts of billions. There are prayers in Latin that bind us to the universal Church across time and language, and prayers in the vernacular that speak with the intimacy of a child addressing a Father. There are prayers of adoration, of contrition, of thanksgiving, and of supplication.
But the Catholic tradition of prayer does not end with the great inherited texts. The Church has always encouraged the faithful to speak to God in their own words — to bring the raw substance of their lives before the Almighty in spontaneous, personal prayer. The “canned” prayers, as some call them, are not a substitute for this personal communion but a school for it: they teach us the language of prayer, the posture of the heart, so that when we speak in our own voice, we speak with the vocabulary of saints.
At Domus Dei, we have gathered these prayers — ancient and modern, Latin and English, contemplative and vocal — into a single library designed to deepen your life of prayer, wherever you are on the journey.
