My heart is strengthened whensoever I do call upon thee, and confidently I hope that, through thine intercession, I shall receive from Jesus the favour for which I have prayed. St. Charbel Makhlouf (also written Sharbel) is one of the most beloved wonderworking saints of the East — a Maronite monk and hermit of Lebanon, whose Church is an ancient Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with Rome. He was born on 8 May 1828 into a poor Maronite family in Bekaa Kafra, the highest village in the mountains of North Lebanon. Drawn to solitude and prayer from boyhood, he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order in 1851 and was ordained a priest in 1859. In 1875 he withdrew to the hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul at Annaya, where he spent his last twenty-three years in prayer, fasting, manual labor, and penance, with a burning devotion to the Holy Eucharist. He died on Christmas Eve of 1898, at the age of seventy.
What followed his death made him famous throughout the world. An extraordinary light was seen over his grave, and when his tomb was opened his body was found incorrupt, exuding a liquid of blood and water; for decades it defied natural corruption. Through his intercession an immense number of miracles and cures have been reported — among Christians of every rite and among Muslims as well — so that he is honored as a great intercessor and healer. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1965 and canonized by the same pope on 9 October 1977.
This novena — nine days of prayer, one of the Church’s most trusted ways of asking a particular grace — invokes St. Charbel’s intercession for whatever need the soul brings, naming the grace each day and closing with the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. Its language is warm and eastern, full of tender titles: "vessel of heavenly fragrance," "garden of Christian virtue," "friend of Christ crucified," "guiding star of the afflicted and perplexed." Through it all runs the saint’s own life — hidden, silent, poor, and wholly given to God — and the confidence that the hermit who lived unseen now stands "crowned with glory" before the throne, powerful to obtain what we ask, if it be God’s will.

St. Charbel was a Maronite — an ancient Eastern Catholic Church of Lebanon in full communion with the Pope of Rome — showing the one Catholic faith lived in the Christian East.
He spent the last 23 years of his life as a hermit at Annaya, in unbroken prayer, fasting, and manual labor, with an intense devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
He was stricken while celebrating the Divine Liturgy on 16 December 1898 and died eight days later, on Christmas Eve; a strange light was afterward seen shining over his grave.
When his tomb was opened his body was found incorrupt and exuding a liquid of blood and water, which continued for decades and drew pilgrims from around the world.
Miracles and cures beyond number have been reported through his intercession — among Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims alike — earning him fame as a great healer.
He was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1965, during the Second Vatican Council, and canonized by the same pope on 9 October 1977.

Though I be unworthy, my hope and my confidence in thine intercession do rest upon thy holiness. Assist thou me now, that I may obtain the favour for which I earnestly pray:

My heart is strengthened whensoever I do call upon thee, and confidently I hope that, through thine intercession, I shall receive from Jesus the favour for which I have prayed. I repent me of my sins, and I resolve, with the help of God's grace, to turn away from them and to remain faithful unto the Lord. Obtain for me the petition which now I lay before thee:

Look Thou mercifully upon all who do invoke his prayers, and chiefly upon them that are sick, or afflicted, or without hope.
