St. Michael Prayer

Sancti Michaelis Archangeli Oratio

Sancte Michael Archangele,
defende nos in proelio;
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis,
Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,
divina virtute in infernum detrude.
Amen.

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Background: Pope Leo XIII’s Pontificate

Pope Leo XIII (pontificate: 1878–1903) lived during a time of great spiritual and political upheaval:

  • The rise of secularism in Europe, with governments increasingly hostile to the Church.
  • The loss of the Papal States to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, leaving the Pope a “prisoner of the Vatican.”
  • The spread of anti-clericalism, Freemasonry, socialism, and atheism.
  • The growing confidence of “modernists” who rejected traditional Catholic doctrine.

Leo XIII was deeply aware of the battle between the powers of darkness and the Church of Christ.

The Vision of October 13, 1884

The Prayer to Saint Michael is most often connected to an extraordinary event recounted by Pope Leo’s close aides and witnesses.
On October 13, 1884, after celebrating Mass in his private Vatican chapel, Pope Leo XIII suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood transfixed for about 10 minutes, pale and shaken. When he came to himself, he immediately went to his office and composed the now-famous Prayer to Saint Michael.

The vision (as passed down in Church tradition):

Pope Leo reportedly overheard a chilling conversation between Jesus and Satan:

  • Satan boasted that he could destroy the Church if given more power and more time.
  • Jesus allowed him approximately 100 years to test humanity and the Church, similar to how Job was tested.
  • Satan then unleashed a torrent of evil into the world.

Profoundly shaken by what he heard and saw in this vision — some even say he saw a vision of the terrible future spiritual trials of the Church — the Pope sought Heaven’s aid.

The Prayer and Its Purpose

That same day, Leo XIII composed the short Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, invoking the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts to defend the faithful against Satan.

The Leonine Prayers After Mass

In 1886, Leo XIII ordered that the Saint Michael Prayer, along with several other prayers (Hail Mary, Salve Regina, etc.), be said aloud by priest and faithful after every Low Mass. These became known as the Leonine Prayers — designed to strengthen the Church against her enemies and to ask for the freedom of the Church in Rome (since the Pope had lost the Papal States).

Later Developments

  • 1930s: Pope Pius XI directed that the Leonine Prayers be offered particularly for the conversion of Russia, as atheistic Communism spread.
  • 1964: After Vatican II, the obligation to say the Leonine Prayers at the end of Low Mass was suppressed — but the faithful were never forbidden from praying them privately or publicly.
  • 1970s–present: Many traditional Catholic communities and individuals continued to pray the Saint Michael Prayer after Mass, recognizing its enduring importance in the spiritual battle of our times.

Why Saint Michael?

Saint Michael the Archangel is the leader of God’s army of angels. His name means “Who is like God?” — a battle cry against Satan’s pride.

  • In Revelation 12:7–9, Michael leads the heavenly hosts to defeat the dragon (Satan) and cast him out of heaven.
  • He is regarded as the special protector of the Church, the defender of souls, and the one who brings the faithful to Heaven at the hour of death.

Why It Still Matters Today

Even though the obligation to pray it after Mass has ended, the Church still faces spiritual warfare against sin, error, and demonic forces. The prayer remains a powerful spiritual weapon:

  • Against temptation.
  • Against the influence of evil in the world.
  • For the protection of the Church and the salvation of souls.

Summary

The Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel was born from a mystical vision and a deep awareness of the Church’s ongoing spiritual struggle. It is a brief, powerful plea for help in the cosmic battle between good and evil — and remains one of the most beloved prayers in Catholic devotion.
