The Life
Stefan Wyszyński was Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland for over three decades, the towering figure of the Polish Church under Communism. Ordained in 1924 and made Bishop of Lublin in 1946, he was raised to the primatial see in 1948 and created a cardinal in 1953.
Called 'the Primate of the Millennium,' he held the faith of a nation against the atheist state — imprisoned for three years (1953-56), he never bent. He mentored the young Karol Wojtyła and urged him to accept election as pope. He died in 1981 and was beatified by Pope Francis in 2021.
