Alberto Sy Uy
Alberto Sy Uy was born October 18, 1966, in Ubay, Bohol. He studied philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Tagbilaran, and theology at St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary, Cagayan de Oro, earned a licentiate in sacred theology at Loyola School of Theology, Quezon City, and a doctorate in sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (2002–2006).
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Talibon on April 14, 1993. He served as parochial vicar and parish priest at Jagna, as dean of seminarians at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, as vice-rector of St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary, and as parish priest of Talibon Cathedral and episcopal vicar for the clergy of Talibon. He served as Bishop of Tagbilaran (2017–2025).
He was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Cebu in 2025, and was installed on September 30, 2025, succeeding Jose Palma. After the October 2025 earthquake in Cebu, he visited earthquake-affected parishes in northern Cebu.
- 2024-11-28(INHERITED - predecessor's act, NOT Uy's.) Archbishop Jose Palma suspended the Tabor Hill dawn Mass (the authorised Traditional Latin Mass in Cebu, celebrated at dawn on Sundays at Tabor Hill) by letter dated November 28, 2024, issued by Msgr. Renato Beltran Jr., chancellor, on Palma's behalf and publicized December 2, 2024. The letter authorised three priests only (Msgr. Joseph Tan, Fr. Andrei Ventanilla, Fr. Luigi Kerschbamer) at the Chapel of the Holy Relics, OAD Tabor Hill. Uy, installed September 30, 2025, inherited the suspension; no restoration and no re-imposition by Uy was found. ↗
Archbishop Uy has neither permitted nor suppressed the Traditional Latin Mass by his own act in Cebu. His posture is no_record, with an inherited suppression recorded in prose: under his predecessor, Archbishop Jose Palma, the authorised Traditional Latin Mass in Cebu - a dawn Mass on Sundays at Tabor Hill - was suspended by letter dated November 28, 2024. Uy, installed September 30, 2025, inherited that suspension; no restoration by Uy and no fresh suppression by Uy was found.
The figures are evidenced, not asserted as a closure decree: before Palma's suspension, Cebu had one authorised Traditional Latin Mass site (Tabor Hill), and after it, zero operating sites evidenced. A change of posture for Uy would require a governing act by Uy himself; the inherited state, however long it persists, does not become his posture by mere passage of time.
No decree, permission, suppression, expansion, or transfer of the Traditional Latin Mass by Uy in Tagbilaran was found. He is not to be confused with Mel Rey Uy, Bishop of Lucena.
