The Life

Alfonso Gerardo Miranda Guardiola was born on 6 July 1966 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, the first of four children of Ildefonso Miranda Miranda and María del Carmen Guardiola Parra. He studied industrial administration engineering at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León from 1983 to 1987 and worked as a professional engineer in Monterrey industry from 1987 to 1989, before entering the Major Seminary of Monterrey on 13 August 1989. He was ordained a deacon on 14 August 1997 in the Basílica del Roble, Monterrey, and a priest on 15 August 1998 by Cardinal Adolfo Antonio Suárez Rivera in the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Monterrey, incardinated for Monterrey. He took the licentiate in moral theology at the Universidad Pontificia de México.

As a priest he served as seminary prefect and teacher; as deputy parish priest and rector of the temple of San Maximiliano Kolbe; as secretary-chancellor of the Curia; and as director of the ecclesiastical archive and of the Department of History of the metropolitan archdiocese of Monterrey, all as summarized in the Holy See bulletin. A regional press biography dates his chancellorship to 2005-2014 and adds service as advisor for the pastoral care of the divorced and for the Retrouvaille movement in 2009. In the Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano he was elected secretary general in 2016 and served two triennia, from April 2016 to November 2021; he was also General Coordinator of the National Council for the Protection of Minors from 2019 to 2021, and from 2021 head of the Episcopal Secretariat for the Family, the family dimension's triennium 2021-2024. The Los Angeles Press account of his secretary-generalship calls it a period of six years in one sentence and a rare five-year period in the next; the dated endpoints, April 2016 to November 2021, govern, not either duration label.

Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Idicra and auxiliary bishop of Monterrey on 22 March 2014, and he received episcopal ordination on 13 June 2014. His consecrators and the venue are not stated in the opened sources, and the Holy See bulletin for the 2014 appointment itself was not located in search; the 2024 bulletin recapitulating both dates is cited instead, and no bulletin URL is constructed. Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Piedras Negras on 8 June 2024, accepting the resignation of Bishop Alonso Gerardo Garza Treviño. Piedras Negras received him on 31 July 2024; the Los Angeles Press report embeds the 1 August 2024 Capital and Zócalo Piedras Negras front pages on the toma de posesión. He had no other see before Piedras Negras.

Image captions confirm the embedded 1 August 2024 Capital and Zocalo Piedras Negras front pages on the toma de posesion, as the roster's from_source states. The article once reverses his surnames ('el obispo Guardiola Miranda'): a source slip only. The article does not name his predecessor or successor as secretary general, and no succession is coded; the lead that he succeeded Lira Rugarcia in that office was not verified from any opened source. The headline's 'tolerancia cero' pledge is a headline-level reported pledge in a critical article and is not carried as a verified quotation. The rest of the article concerns the Riojas Martinez abuse case and Torreon: predecessor and diocese background, not his acts.
