Bruce Lewandowski
Bruce Alan Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., was born June 8, 1967, in Toledo, Ohio, and raised on a family farm in Lima, Ohio. A member of the Redemptorists (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer), he professed solemn vows September 10, 1988, and was ordained a priest May 7, 1994. His early priesthood was spent in immigrant and Hispanic ministry: St. Cecilia Parish in Manhattan, Immaculate Conception in the Bronx, missionary work in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia (1998-2000), and pastorates in Philadelphia and Kensington, Pennsylvania.
In 2015 the Redemptorists assigned him as pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Baltimore, a heavily immigrant congregation. Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop of Baltimore and titular bishop of Croae on June 10, 2020; he was consecrated August 18, 2020. In Baltimore he became known for immigrant advocacy and, in 2024, for helping present the archdiocese's plan to consolidate its city parishes.
On April 8, 2025, Pope Francis appointed him the tenth Bishop of Providence, Rhode Island; he was installed May 20, 2025, at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. He asked to be known simply as 'Bishop Bruce.' His profile is that of a Redemptorist pastor rooted in Hispanic and social-justice ministry; he has no known public record on the Traditional Latin Mass in more than three decades of priesthood, and his Providence liturgical record is only months old as of mid-2026.
Bishop Lewandowski inherits an unusually healthy traditional-liturgy landscape in Rhode Island, but he did not build it and has not yet meaningfully touched it. The foundation was laid by an earlier predecessor, Bishop Thomas Tobin, who in 2018 entrusted St. Mary's Church on Broadway in Providence to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), creating a full Traditional Latin Mass parish where every Mass and sacrament follows the 1962 books. When Traditionis Custodes was issued in July 2021, Tobin declined to crack down, publicly maintaining the status quo. A second parish, Holy Name of Jesus in Providence, offers the 1962 Mass alongside the Ordinary Form.
Between Tobin and Lewandowski sits Bishop Richard Henning (coadjutor 2022, diocesan bishop 2023 until he became Archbishop of Boston in late 2024), under whom the arrangements continued. So Lewandowski, installed May 2025, is the third bishop in the chain and the direct successor of the vacancy Henning left -- not the direct successor of Tobin, as is sometimes assumed. What matters for Tradition is that as of his arrival the TLM ecosystem was intact and thriving.
Under Lewandowski's watch that ecosystem has continued undisturbed: St. Mary's FSSP parish maintains a robust daily and Sunday TLM schedule, a sign of continuity, not suppression. But two cautions temper any optimism. First, an FSSP-run parish enjoys its own institutional governance, so its survival is only weakly attributable to the local bishop's goodwill. Second, Lewandowski's entire formation is Redemptorist Hispanic-ministry and social-justice work; he has no public traditionalist track record in over thirty years. The honest verdict is deeds-based and provisional: he has done nothing hostile, but nothing affirmatively pro-Tradition either. Judge him by what he does next, not by the inheritance he was handed.
