The Life

Eduardo Muñoz Ochoa was born on 13 October 1968 in Guadalajara. He was ordained a priest on 22 May 1997, incardinated in the metropolitan archdiocese of Guadalajara; neither the Holy See bulletin nor any opened source states his ordaining bishop or the place of ordination. He took the licentiate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the licentiate in philosophy at UNIVA in Guadalajara. The bulletin lists his Guadalajara offices as parish vicar, formator, spiritual director of the seminary, executive director of the episcopal dimension of seminaries, and formator in the major seminary, with no parish names or dates. His parents, his seminary of formation by name, and the date and place of his diaconate were not found in opened sources and are not inferred here.

Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Satafis and auxiliary bishop of Guadalajara on 27 November 2020, jointly with Manuel González Villaseñor (titular Ploaghe), and he received episcopal ordination on 22 February 2021. His consecrator is not established from opened sources: the Catholic-Hierarchy bishop page, when opened, returned only an episcopal-lineage list headed by José Francisco Cardinal Robles Ortega, which is a lineage indication, not a labelled principal consecrator, and no co-consecrators or venue are stated. Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Autlán on 7 February 2024, on acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Rafael Sandoval Sandoval, M.N.M.

He took possession as seventh (VII) bishop of Autlán on 4 April 2024. The archdiocesan boletín reports that the party left Guadalajara that morning with Apostolic Nuncio Joseph Spiteri and Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega; that he made his profession and oath of fidelity in the sacristy of the Diocesan Seminary chapel before the nuncio, the archbishop, and emeritus Bishop Rafael Sandoval; that Mass at 11:00 was presided by Cardinal Robles; that the Autlán chancellor-secretary read the apostolic letters; that Robles delivered the crozier; that Muñoz Ochoa took the see and continued presiding; and that in the afternoon he received the cathedral according to the established rite. At the possession Mass he closed by citing St Augustine and St Ignatius of Antioch, as reported in the boletín; those lines are citations of saints in reported speech, not his own words, and are not quoted in this dossier. A possession-day press roundtable followed, for which no transcript was found.

What he inheritedNo provision, permission, restriction, decree, or statement by him concerning the 1962 Missal was found for his Autlán tenure through as_of. Nothing found shows him celebrating, authorizing, suppressing, or commenting on the pre-1970 Roman Missal. Silence in indexed sources is not a position. Not checkable in this pass: Autlán diocesan Facebook or social feeds (no official Autlán site or social feed surfaced in search), unindexed Autlán chancery circulars, Mass schedules, parish bulletins, and permission letters, and the possession-day press-roundtable remarks beyond the boletín summary.

What he inheritedNo decree, permission, restriction, celebration, or statement by him concerning the 1962 Missal was found for his Guadalajara auxiliary tenure. The 21 September 2021 decree implementing Traditionis custodes in Guadalajara is Cardinal Robles Ortega's act as diocesan ordinary, not his; as an auxiliary he does not promulgate diocesan provisions.

Possession 4 April 2024: comitiva with Nuncio Joseph Spiteri and Cardinal Robles Ortega, profession and oath in the seminary chapel sacristy, 11:00 Mass presided by Robles, apostolic letters read by the chancellor-secretary, crozier delivered by Robles, Muñoz Ochoa took the see and continued presiding, afternoon reception of the cathedral "según el rito establecido." The closing-words report has him citing St Augustine and St Ignatius; those are citations of saints in reported speech, NOT his words, and the paraphrased invitation to walk together is not a quote either.
