The Life

Elias Richard Lorenzo was born on October 6, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Sunset Park neighborhood, attending St. Agatha School and Cathedral Prep in Brooklyn. He earned a philosophy degree from Don Bosco College, Newton, and entered St. Mary's Abbey, Morristown, in 1983, making his first Benedictine profession on March 21, 1985. He later earned a master's in liturgical theology from St. John's University, Collegeville, a master's in counseling psychology from Seton Hall, and a canon-law licentiate from The Catholic University of America.

For more than thirty years he worked at Delbarton School in Morristown, teaching, directing campus ministry, chairing religious studies, sitting on the board, and serving as vice president for development, with Operation Smile medical missions abroad. In the monastery he was director of liturgy, prior, and rector, served twelve years on the Paterson diocesan liturgical commission, as vicar for religious in Metuchen, and as canonical counsel to Praesidium on national safe-environment standards. In Rome he was prior at Sant'Anselmo and procurator general of the Benedictine Confederation, and in 2016 he was elected abbot president of the American-Cassinese Congregation, an association of twenty-five monasteries in six countries.

Pope Francis named him an auxiliary bishop of Newark on February 27, 2020, and Cardinal Joseph Tobin consecrated him on June 30, 2020, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with the titular see of Tabuda. As auxiliary he serves as regional bishop for Union County, assisting the archbishop in pastoral visits, parish life, and administrative and canonical affairs across the archdiocese. Formed by stability and community life, he became a diocesan bishop without ceasing to be a Benedictine, and remains in that office.

Controversies
SNAP challenge over the Delbarton record (August 2025)
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests called in August 2025 for Lorenzo to be excluded from consideration as Cardinal Tobin's successor, citing his leadership roles at Delbarton School and St. Mary's Abbey during decades when monks and a lay teacher were credibly accused of abusing students in the 1970s and 1980s. The reports name Lorenzo as a leader during that era, not as an accused abuser himself, and no finding against him personally is stated in the sources cited; the archdiocese said the state attorney general's office had not contacted it regarding Lorenzo.
The Old Mass, See by See
Newark2020-06-30 – presentauxiliaryNo act of his own
What he inheritedLorenzo was appointed auxiliary bishop on February 27, 2020, more than a year before Traditionis custodes, and consecrated on June 30, 2020. He serves under Cardinal Joseph Tobin, who as ordinary holds the exclusive competence to authorize use of the 1962 Missal in the archdiocese. The July 2021 diocesan-response survey listed Newark as N/A, and no Lorenzo act of his own on the 1962 Missal has been located in the TC era. Diocesan decisions on the older Mass are the ordinary's acts, not his, and move nothing here.

Domus Dei’s Verdict
The Bishop & the Mass of Ages
No governing record of his own

On the older liturgy, Bishop Lorenzo has no governing record of his own, and this dossier does not invent one. Real searching across diocesan news, the July 2021 survey of diocesan responses to Traditionis custodes, and general coverage turned up no decree, authorization, dispensation request, or appointment of his sustaining the 1962 Missal, and no public word from him for or against it. He is an auxiliary bishop, and in Newark the governance of the older liturgy belongs to the ordinary, Cardinal Tobin, not to his auxiliaries.

What he inherited, then, is Tobin's archdiocese, not a policy of his making. The July 2021 survey listed Newark as having published no response to Traditionis custodes, and no Lorenzo-era act of his own has been located since. Any later archdiocesan decision about where and how the older Mass is celebrated in Newark, including any pause ordered in 2026, is the ordinary's act and is therefore recorded here as context only, never as Lorenzo's posture, under the Parker precedent that a predecessor's or ordinary's acts never move an auxiliary's posture.

The honest verdict is accordingly no_record, at medium confidence: a searched absence, not an assumed one. That verdict says nothing about his private liturgical sympathies, which no source states, and it says nothing about the archdiocese as a whole, whose record belongs to Tobin. If a Lorenzo act on the 1962 Missal emerges, it should be added as a dated action and the posture revisited; until then, silence is the record, and the dossier leaves it silent.
