Gregg M. Caggianelli
Gregg Michael Caggianelli was born on August 2, 1968, in Kingston, New York, and grew up drawn early to both the priesthood and military service. He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1990, and was commissioned as an Air Force officer, serving at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. While still in uniform he earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Dayton in 1994.
He left active duty in 1996, remaining in the Air Force Reserve, and entered St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida, where he earned a Master of Divinity. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Venice on October 25, 2002, he served as parochial vicar at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota, directed vocations and seminary formation for the diocese, and administered St. Francis Xavier Parish in Fort Myers from 2010 to 2013. In 2013 he returned to St. Vincent de Paul Seminary as vice rector and dean of human formation, teaching homiletics and earning a Doctor of Ministry in homiletics in 2020.
He continued as an Air Force Reserve chaplain, rising to colonel and serving as senior Reserve adviser to the United States Air Force Academy chaplain in Colorado Springs. Pope Francis appointed him an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, on February 21, 2025, and Archbishop Timothy Broglio ordained him a bishop on May 9, 2025, at the seminary chapel in Boynton Beach, making him the first American bishop ordained after the election of Pope Leo XIV the previous day. His episcopal motto is My grace is sufficient.
No governing act of Bishop Caggianelli's own on the 1962 Missal was found. Targeted searches of his name with Traditionis Custodes, Latin Mass, the 1962 Missal, and the extraordinary form returned no decree, authorization, dispensation request, or appointment sustaining the older Mass, and no statement of his on the subject. As an auxiliary he does not hold the diocesan bishop's exclusive competence over the 1962 Missal in his archdiocese, so no archdiocesan permission can be read as his act in any case.
The one archdiocesan permission on record belongs to the ordinary, not to him, and predates him: the National Catholic Register's July 2021 survey lists the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA among the jurisdictions whose bishops issued statements granting temporary permission for priests already celebrating according to the 1962 Missal to continue. Caggianelli was not appointed auxiliary until February 21, 2025, so that 2021 act cannot be attributed to him, and no later act of his superseding or renewing it was found.
No site count is asserted. The archdiocese is non-territorial, serving Catholics in the armed forces, in Veterans Affairs medical centers, and in government service abroad, so a territorial parish count does not apply, and no list of 1962-Missal sites under Caggianelli was found. No traditional society, no Roman dispensation, and no 2026 statement on the Society of St. Pius X was evidenced for him.
