Gustavo Rodríguez Vega
Gustavo Rodríguez Vega was born on 7 March 1955 in Monterrey, the son of Manuel Rodríguez Mora and Blanca Lilia Vega de Rodríguez. He entered the Monterrey seminary on 2 September 1970, did preparatory studies at the CUM, philosophy from 1973 to 1976 and theology to 1980, and was ordained a priest on 15 August 1980, the Assumption, at the Basílica de la Purísima Concepción by Tirado y Pedraza; he said his first Mass the next day at the Oblatas chapel, where he was chaplain for two years, and his first solemn Mass on 22 August at the Guadalupe chapel, and he was chaplain, formator and teacher at the minor seminary. In 1986 he went to Italy, where he took a licentiate in Ethics and Social Doctrine at the Gregorian University, returning in 1989 as Director of the Secretariado de Evangelización y Catequesis and director of the Escuela Bíblica, seminary teacher, Academic Director of the Centro Asociado de Teología a Distancia and Rector of the Templo del Santísimo Redentor; he was parish priest of Jesús el Buen Pastor from 1992 to 1994, spiritual director of the Instituto de Teología, and seminary rector from 1995.
On 27 June 2001 John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Monterrey and titular bishop of Obba, and he was consecrated bishop on 14 August 2001 by Suárez Rivera, with Bertello and Alba Díaz as co-consecrators; the consecration venue is not established and none is inferred. On 8 October 2008 he was designated Bishop of Nuevo Laredo, and he took possession on 19 November 2008. On 1 June 2015 he was named Archbishop of Yucatán, and he was inaugurated on 29 July 2015 at the Cathedral of San Ildefonso as the fifth archbishop, succeeding Berlie Belaunzarán. On 22 January 2026, the day Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas died, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Cancún-Chetumal, and he ceased on 27 February 2026 when Salvador González Morales was installed as the second bishop of that see. He was still Archbishop of Yucatán at as_of, having turned 71 on 7 March 2026. In the CEM he was Vice-President of the Consejo de Presidencia for the triennium 2021-2024 (elected 9 November 2021); he holds no 2024-2027 CEM commission (checked-and-absent) and no Yucatán-province Permanent Council role (the June 2023 directorio lists Elizondo Cárdenas titular and Mena Díaz suplente for that province). He was vocal, then president, of the Pastoral Social-Cáritas dimension from 2006 to 2009, reelected for 2009 to 2012 (ES Wikipedia tier); suplente representative of the Monterrey province to the Consejo de Presidencia from 2006 to 2009 (ES Wikipedia tier); a member of the CELAM Justice and Solidarity department from 2011 to 2015 and its president from 14 May 2015 (ES Wikipedia tier); and president of Cáritas América Latina y el Caribe from May 2023 (EN Wikipedia tier; NotiRASA article unopened).
The ES Wikipedia range ends (19 November 2008 for Monterrey, 1 June 2015 for Nuevo Laredo) are display artifacts, not tenure closes; and the Riviera Maya News decree year '2025' is a misprint for 2026.
