The Life

Héctor López Alvarado was born on 13 December 1970 in Guadalajara. The 2018 Holy See bulletin gives the date without a birthplace; the 2026 bulletin adds Guadalajara as the birthplace. He studied at the seminary of Guadalajara and took the licentiate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome; neither bulletin gives years for the licentiate. Catholic-Hierarchy lists his diaconal ordination on 24 December 2000 at Guadalajara; that date is spine-only, not stated in either bulletin. He was ordained a priest on 19 May 2002; neither bulletin states his ordaining bishop or the place of ordination. BIRTH-YEAR CONFLICT, roster kept: both Holy See bulletins give 13 December 1970, while Catholic-Hierarchy's 13 December events page gives 1973 (day and month agreeing). The roster's 1970-12-13 follows the bulletins; spine ages computed from 1973 must not be copied into a bulletin-based dossier.

As a priest he served as parochial vicar of various parishes, chaplain of the Marist friars, seminary formator, dean, parish priest of María Madre del Redentor, parish priest of Nuestra Señora de Bugambilias, episcopal vicar of the vicariate of Nuestra Señora del Rosario Toluquilla, and auxiliary of the archdiocesan Centre for Television and Audiovisual Production. At his episcopal appointment in 2018 he was pastor of Nuestra Señora de Bugambilias and episcopal vicar of the Toluquilla vicariate. Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Sereddeli and auxiliary bishop of Guadalajara on 2 February 2018, jointly with Juan Manuel Muñoz Curiel (Tucci) and Engelberto Polino Sánchez (Vazari Didda), and he received episcopal ordination on 21 April 2018. On 10 August 2019 he gave the opening talk at the Diocese of Davenport's theological and pastoral conference for Spanish-speaking Catholics at the Bridge View Center, Ottumwa, Iowa, on "Mary, full of grace," as a preamble to the Assumption, and presided at Mass; the conference report paraphrases his teaching and records no substantive verbatim passage by him, so the talk is an activity, not a published work.

Pope Leo XIV appointed him bishop of Puerto Escondido on 29 September 2026, accepting the resignation of Florencio Armando Colín Cruz. He was still styled bishop-elect of Puerto Escondido on 11 October 2026, when he attended the Mass of Renewal of the Patronage of Our Lady of Zapopan in Guadalajara, and no Puerto Escondido possession date had been established as of 28 October 2026, so no Puerto Escondido tenure is coded in this dossier. The appointment is recorded here and the tenure will open on the possession date when it is established.

In His Own Words
The Old Mass, See by See
Guadalajara2018-04-21 – 2026-09-29auxiliaryNo act of his own
What he inheritedNo decree, permission, restriction, celebration, or statement by him concerning the 1962 Missal was found. The 21 September 2021 decree implementing Traditionis custodes in Guadalajara is Cardinal Robles Ortega's act as diocesan ordinary, not his; as an auxiliary he does not promulgate diocesan provisions. General Guadalajara traditional-Mass background (an FSSP apostolate under Cardinal Sandoval Íñiguez, predating his episcopate, and a 2021 FSSP ordination at the Martyrs' Sanctuary) does not name him and is not attributed to him. His one verified statement (Columbia, May 2026) concerns the Cristero martyrs' witness, not liturgical form. The March 2026 provincial Cristiada centenary message is collective; his individual signature on it is unverified (InfoVaticana, 21 March 2026, does not name him).
Since the SSPX decree of 2 July 2026: No statement recorded as of 2026-10-28.
