Jorge Alberto Cavazos Arizpe
Jorge Alberto Cavazos Arizpe was born in Monterrey on 31 July 1962, the youngest of six children of Héctor Manuel Cavazos Gutiérrez and Lidia Arizpe González. He entered the seminary of Monterrey in August 1980, where he studied Humanities and Philosophy, and studied theology at the Pontifical University of Mexico from 1984 to 1989, obtaining a licentiate in moral theology. He was ordained deacon on 15 August 1988 and priest on 31 May 1989, the date the Holy See bulletin gives and which governs here. The 31 January 1989 variant printed in the CEM Nunciature curriculum vitae, in the CEM directorio entry for him, and in the San Juan diocesan curriculum vitae page is flagged as a variant, not merged; the Spanish Wikipedia infobox date of 31 March 1989 is wrong. His offices were spiritual director of the introductory course (1989-1993) and of the Institute of Philosophy (1993-1999); professor of moral theology (1993-1999 and 2002-2008); spiritual director and head of the Theology Apostolate (1999-2002); parish priest of Jesús el Buen Pastor in Monterrey (2002-2009); and head of the Intellectual Dimension of the Clergy Commission and of the Province of Monterrey, with collaboration in the priestly renewal month (2004-2009).
He was appointed titular bishop of Isola and auxiliary bishop of Monterrey on 7 January 2009, and was consecrated bishop on 26 March 2009. His consecrators are Wikipedia-attributed, not asserted: principal Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega, co-consecrators Nuncio Christophe Pierre and Miguel Ángel Alba Díaz of La Paz. The consecration venue is in conflict between the language versions of Wikipedia, Spanish giving the Basílica de Guadalupe de Monterrey and Italian giving the Monterrey cathedral, and neither form is asserted here. He was apostolic administrator of the archdiocese of Monterrey from 7 February to 5 December 2012, and apostolic administrator of the diocese of Nuevo Laredo from 29 July 2015 to 13 January 2016; the Spanish Wikipedia body names the Nuevo Laredo successor wrongly as Enrique Díaz Díaz, while the actual successor was Enrique Sánchez Martínez, so the date is citable from that article and the name is flagged as its error. He was appointed bishop of San Juan de los Lagos on 2 April 2016 and began his episcopal ministry there on 20 May 2016, the date the diocesan bishops page and Spanish Wikipedia agree on; the am.com.mx article cited by Wikipedia for the possession was not opened. He was appointed apostolic administrator of San Juan de los Lagos on 29 June 2022, two days before taking possession of San Luis Potosí, and held that administration until his successor José Leopoldo González González took possession on 25 May 2024; the San Juan diocesan bulletin of 24 March 2024 announces González as VII bishop, ending a wait of practically two years. He was appointed metropolitan archbishop of San Luis Potosí on 26 March 2022, on the age-limit resignation of Jesús Carlos Cabrero Romero, and began his ministry there on 1 July 2022, after his toma de posesión; the Italian Wikipedia date of 30 June is rejected, the 30 June events having been arrival, cathedral reception, báculo handover, and eve farewell, with the profession of faith and cátedra possession hours before the 1 July ceremony. He was appointed apostolic administrator of Matehuala by Pope Leo XIV on 9 April 2026, after Margarito Salazar Cárdenas was transferred to Tampico, and no successor had been appointed through 28 October 2026; the appointment document itself was not opened.
He has been treasurer general of the Mexican Episcopal Conference since 9 November 2021, succeeding Ramón Castro Castro, and was president of OCEAS from 2021 to 2024. He made his ad limina visit on 15 May 2014, and welcomed Pope Francis at the Ciudad Juárez meeting with the world of work on 17 February 2016. He received the pallium from Pope Francis on 29 June 2022 at St. Peter's, and it was imposed on 13 August 2022 by Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes at San Luis Potosí Cathedral. His episcopal motto is Instaurare omnia in Christo, Restore all things in Christ, on the diocesan escudo page, which bases it on Ephesians 1:10 and notes it echoes the identical motto of St Pius X; that echo is a motto source, never a link to the Society of St Pius X. In June 2025 he wrote to Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona asking that the Marilyn Manson concert at the Feria Nacional Potosina be cancelled; the governor declined, and the concert went ahead on 10 August 2025 at the Teatro del Pueblo. The letter is recorded here as a public act, not as a controversy: it alleges no wrongdoing by him.
