The Life

Jorge Rodriguez-Novelo was born on March 22, 1955, in Merida, in the Mexican state of Yucatan, the fifth of six children, and grew up in a Catholic home where the name of God was respected. He attended a primary school run by the Maryknoll Sisters and secondary and preparatory schools run by the Marist Brothers. After high school he joined the Legionaries of Christ, entering the novitiate in 1984, and studied in Rome, earning a licentiate in philosophy from the Gregorian University in 1984, a bachelor's degree in theology from the Angelicum in 1987, and a licentiate in 1990 and a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian in 1994.

He was ordained a priest of the Legionaries of Christ on December 24, 1987, and spent his early priesthood in academic work in Rome, including as dean of the theology department at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum. Invited to Denver by Archbishop Charles Chaput in 1999, he taught at the new Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary and served as associate pastor of Saint Therese in Aurora and associate director of vocations for Hispanic discernment. Returning to Denver in 2006 after a pastorate, he served as vice-rector of Saint John Vianney from 2007 to 2014, and was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Denver in 2008. He became pastor of Holy Cross in Thornton in 2014.

Pope Francis appointed him an auxiliary bishop of Denver on August 25, 2016, and he was consecrated on November 4, 2016, by Archbishop Samuel Aquila. He became vicar for clergy in 2017, and his ministry has centered on Denver's Hispanic community, bridging its parishes; he still held the office in October 2026, under Archbishop James Golka.

Major Works & Initiatives
Saint John Vianney Seminary vice-rector and professor (2007-2014)
Rodriguez served as vice-rector of Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver from 2007 to 2014 and as a professor there, after earlier teaching at the new seminary from 1999 and academic posts in Rome, including dean of theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum.
Pastor of Holy Cross, Thornton (from 2014)
Rodriguez was pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Thornton from 2014, where he worked to integrate the Hispanic community into the wider Denver Catholic community, a task he said he hoped to carry further as auxiliary bishop.
Vicar for clergy (from 2017); joint migration letter signatory (October 2026)
Rodriguez became vicar for clergy of the Archdiocese of Denver in 2017, and in October 2026 he signed, with Archbishop Golka and other Colorado Christian leaders, a joint letter on migration, 'A Pilgrim People, A Shared Hope.'
The Old Mass, See by See
Denver2016-11-04 – presentauxiliaryNo act of his own
What he inheritedRodriguez has been auxiliary since 2016, under Archbishop Samuel Aquila until Aquila's retirement was accepted on February 7, 2026, and under Archbishop James Golka since Golka's installation on March 25, 2026. In July 2021 Aquila told his priests he needed to study the motu proprio and consult before deciding on permissions, and that until then things might proceed as they had. Denver's continuing provision includes Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Littleton, a personal parish of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter dedicated to the 1962 Missal, established in 2009; no diocesan count of 1962-Missal sites was found, so both counts are null. No governing act of Rodriguez himself on the 1962 Missal was found.

Domus Dei’s Verdict
The Bishop & the Mass of Ages
No governing act of his own on the 1962 Missal found

Jorge Rodriguez has no recorded posture on the 1962 Missal, because no governing act of his own on it has been found. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Denver on August 25, 2016, and he serves as an auxiliary, not as the ordinary who decides diocesan permissions under Traditionis Custodes. Searches for a statement, decree, permission, appointment, or letter of his on the old Mass in 2016-2026 returned nothing attributable to him, so his tenure is filed no_record at medium confidence: absence searched for, not assumed. His long service as a seminary professor and vice-rector, and later as vicar for clergy, produced no 1962-Missal decision of his that was found.

What exists in Denver is an inheritance, and it belongs to the ordinaries, not to Rodriguez. In July 2021 Archbishop Samuel Aquila told his priests he needed to study the motu proprio and consult before deciding on permissions, and that until then things might proceed as they had. Denver's continuing provision includes Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Littleton, a personal parish of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter dedicated to the Traditional Latin Mass and sacraments according to the 1962 Missal, established in 2009. No diocesan count of 1962-Missal sites was found, so both counts stand at null, and the one named society is the Fraternity, by that parish, not by any act of Rodriguez's.

The board row for Denver agrees in direction but must not be confused with Rodriguez's record: it records the archdiocese as preserved at high confidence under Aquila, noting that Aquila permitted the Mass to continue where established, with no suppressions under him or his successor Golka. Rodriguez's no_record says nothing against that row, because the row belongs to the ordinary and this dossier measures only the auxiliary's own acts. A future governing act of Rodriguez's own on the 1962 Missal would be the only thing that could move his tenure off no_record; the archdiocese's provision continuing under Aquila and Golka would not, on its own, do so.
