José Antonio Fernández Hurtado
José Antonio Fernández Hurtado was born in Morelia, Michoacán, on 2 December 1952. He entered the minor seminary of Tula in 1966, studied two years at the Montezuma seminary in the United States, and continued at the Seminario Interregional de Tula, as the AP wire reproducing the Vatican bulletin gives the sequence; that wire governs over the Spanish Wikipedia telling, which puts Montezuma first, prints a graduation in 1973, and misspells Montezuma as Moctezuma. From 1986 to 1989 he studied at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, where he obtained a degree in Pastoral Juvenil y Catequética; the Wikipedia years of 1989 to 1989 are an obvious typo. He was ordained a priest on 14 October 1978 for the diocese of Tula by Bishop José de Jesús Sahagún de la Parra. His offices, as the AP wire gives them, were diocesan Coordinator of Vocational Pastoral 1979 to 1986; Coordinator of Youth Pastoral 1980 to 1983; rector of the Minor Seminary 1989 to 1996; professor of pastoral theology at the Major Seminary 1990 to 2005; secretary of the diocesan curia and coordinator of the Diocesan Commission for the Clergy 1990 to 1994; member of the College of Consultors and the Council for Economic Affairs 1995 to 2005; and Vicar General and parish priest of the Cathedral of Tula 1996 to 2005. The Wikipedia variants, rector from 1990 and vicar general 1994 to 2005, are flagged against the AP wire, not merged.
He was appointed Bishop of Tuxtepec on 11 February 2005 by John Paul II and was consecrated bishop on 11 May 2005. His consecrators are Wikipedia-attributed, not asserted: the infobox names Norberto Rivera Carrera and Octavio Villegas Aguilar, and the body sentence adds José Luis Chávez Botello, Archbishop of Antequera-Oaxaca, and José Trinidad Medel Pérez, Archbishop Emeritus of Durango, as co-consecrators, in a garbled construction that does not settle who was principal, so no principal is asserted here. He was appointed Archbishop of Durango on 26 September 2014 by Francis, succeeding Héctor González Martínez, whose resignation was accepted at the age limit, transferred from Tuxtepec; no Durango possession date was found, so that tenure codes from appointment with the flag carried in the tenure source. He was appointed Archbishop of Tlalnepantla on 25 January 2019 by Francis, the fourth Archbishop Metropolitan, succeeding Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, and took possession on 18 March 2019; he received the pallium from Pope Francis on 29 June 2019. Who administered Tlalnepantla between Aguiar's departure for Mexico, possession 5 February 2018, and his own appointment was not established and is not his tenure.
He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Cuautitlán on 14 September 2021, on the death of Guillermo Rodrigo Teodoro Ortiz Mondragón, and held that administration until Efraín Mendoza Cruz took possession of Cuautitlán on 17 January 2023; the start date carries a Wikipedia-tier flag, while the close is confirmed by Catholic-Hierarchy. He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Azcapotzalco by Pope Leo XIV on 13 April 2026, after Adolfo Miguel Castaño Fonseca, first bishop of Azcapotzalco from 28 September 2019, was transferred to Atlacomulco on 11 February 2026; no successor had been appointed through 28 October 2026, and the February to April 2026 gap is presumably a diocesan administrator, not his tenure. His conference office, elected to a second mandate heading the Catechesis Dimension of the Commission for Prophetic Pastoral of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, is background only, never an act. No work of his own was found: the archdiocesan Modelo de Diagnóstico of February 2024 is authored by the Vicaría de Pastoral with collaborators and merely approved by him, approval is not authorship, and his many archdiocesan homilies are ministry, not works. His 19 December 2020 COVID comunicado is held as a work until the original text is opened.
