The Life

José Armando Álvarez Cano was born in Jiquilpan, diocese of Zamora, on 30 January 1960, and was ordained priest on 8 February 1986, incardinated into the diocese of Zamora; neither bulletin names his ordainer or seminary. He was awarded a licentiate in pastoral theology from the Universidad Pontificia de Mexico. After service as parish vicar in various Zamora parishes, he spent two years as a fidei donum missionary in the diocese of Tacna y Moquegua, Peru, and on return served as parish priest and president of the diocesan Commission for the Formation of the Clergy in Zamora.

He was appointed bishop of the territorial prelature of Huautla on 3 November 2011, the Italian bulletin governing over a 13 November variant in one line of the English rendering, and received episcopal ordination on 20 January 2012; his consecrator and the venue are not established. On 11 May 2019 he was transferred to the diocese of Tampico, taking possession on 5 July 2019, the day Rogelio Cabrera López ceased as apostolic administrator of Tampico. On 25 January 2025 he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Morelia, and he took possession as coadjutor on 17 March 2025; his Tampico tenure therefore closes at that possession, not at the January appointment, since the same Catholic-Hierarchy March 2025 block that records his installation also appoints Óscar Efraín Tamez Villarreal apostolic administrator of Tampico, confirming the vacancy began in March. Both March 2025 dates are spine tier and are flagged as such; a Morelia archdiocesan primary is still owed and would upgrade them. On 19 January 2026, on the resignation of Carlos Garfias Merlos, he succeeded as metropolitan archbishop of Morelia.

No motto, coat of arms, conference office, book, or solely-his pastoral letter was found. Two polemical items about him were considered and not carried: an alleged 2012 indigenous welcome rite before his Huautla ordination and alleged December 2023 remarks on blessings, both sourced only to polemical outlets, neither opened in a primary or reputable-press source, and neither concerning the 1962 Missal.

What he inheritedHis coadjutor tenure is coded from the 17 March 2025 installation, not the 25 January 2025 appointment: an installation is spine-established here, unlike the batch 1 Espinosa Garza coadjutor tenure, where none was. No governing act of his own concerning the 1962 Missal was found for it. A Morelia archdiocesan primary for the installation is still owed.

What he inheritedNo decree, permission, restriction, or public statement of his own concerning the 1962 Missal was found for his Tampico tenure through as_of. The alleged December 2023 remarks on blessings reported only by polemical outlets do not concern the 1962 Missal and were not carried. His Tampico tenure closes at his Morelia coadjutor possession, not at the January 2025 appointment: the March 2025 Catholic-Hierarchy block appointing Tamez Villarreal administrator of Tampico confirms the vacancy began in March.
