The Life

Jose Fuerte Advincula Jr. was born March 30, 1952, in Dumalag, Capiz. He was formed at St. Pius X Seminary, Roxas City, and studied theology at the University of Santo Tomas Central Seminary in Manila. He earned a licentiate in canon law at the Angelicum in Rome and studied guidance and counselling at De La Salle University. His episcopal motto is Audiam ('Listen').

He was ordained a priest for Capiz in 1976. He served as spiritual director, professor, and dean of studies at St. Pius X Seminary, as formator and dean at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology in Vigan (1990–1993), as professor and spiritual director at St. Joseph Regional Seminary, Jaro (1993–1995), as rector of St. Pius X Seminary (1995–1999), as judicial vicar, as first rector of Sancta Maria Mater et Regina Seminarium, Capiz (from July 1999), and as parish priest of Santo Tomas de Villanueva, Dao, Capiz (from February 1, 2000).

He was consecrated a bishop on September 8, 2001, served as Bishop of San Carlos and then as Metropolitan Archbishop of Capiz, was created a cardinal in the consistory of November 28, 2020, and was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila on March 25, 2021, taking possession on June 24, 2021, as the 33rd archbishop.

What he inheritedNo decree, permission, suppression, expansion, or transfer of the Traditional Latin Mass by Advincula for Manila was found. The CBCP statement of July 22, 2021, is the conference's collective act, not his. The Society of St. Pius X chapel of Our Lady of Victories, Quezon City, stands in the Diocese of Cubao, not the Archdiocese of Manila, and no conclusion about Manila is drawn from it. Historic Manila-area Traditional Latin Mass venues in old (2008) listings are pre-Traditionis Custodes listings, in some cases in other dioceses' territory today, and none is tied to an act of Advincula. Domus Dei’s Verdict
The Bishop & the Mass of Ages
No governing act of his own found

No decree, permission, suppression, expansion, or transfer of the Traditional Latin Mass by Cardinal Advincula for Manila was found. The CBCP statement of July 22, 2021, supporting Traditionis Custodes, is the conference's collective act, recorded as context only; Advincula had been Manila archbishop for less than a month, and the statement is not coded as his act.

Two territory traps were guarded against. The Society of St. Pius X chapel of Our Lady of Victories in Quezon City stands in the Diocese of Cubao, not the Archdiocese of Manila, and no conclusion about Manila is drawn from it; the July 2026 Cubao pastoral letter expanding Traditional Latin Mass provision belongs to Bishop Elias Ayuban Jr. of Cubao. Cardinal Rosales's Summorum Pontificum implementation guidelines belong to his predecessor (Manila 2003–2011) and are pre-Traditionis Custodes in any case.

Historic Manila-area Traditional Latin Mass venues in old (2008) listings are pre-Traditionis Custodes listings, in some cases in other dioceses' territory today, and none is tied to an act of Advincula. The Manila archdiocesan website circular PDFs and Facebook page could not be retrieved by text fetch, so a Facebook-only or PDF-only circular would not have surfaced.
