The Life

Luis Manuel López Alfaro was born in Mexico City on 21 June 1963. He trained as an agronomist engineer before entering the Toluca major seminary, was ordained a deacon on 29 September 1990, and was ordained a priest for Toluca on 15 August 1991. In Toluca he was parish vicar of La Asunción de María, Jalatlaco (1992-1993), first-year advisor of the minor seminary (1993-1995), parish priest, dean and member of the Presbyteral Council. In 2004 he transferred to San Cristóbal de Las Casas, where he was parish vicar of Teopisca (2004-2006), parish priest of Comitán (2006-2013), seminary spiritual director (2013-2020), vicar general, pastoral vicar, and member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors.

On 6 June 2020 he was appointed titular bishop of Garba and auxiliary bishop of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, and he was consecrated bishop on 28 August 2020; his consecrator and the consecration venue are not established, and neither is inferred, and his ordinary Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez is not inferred as consecrator. On 9 April 2025 he was appointed Bishop of Tapachula, the ninth bishop of the see, succeeding Jaime Calderón Calderón, who had been designated Archbishop of León on 4 July 2024; he took possession on 27 June 2025, with the profession of faith and oath of fidelity at 9:00 in the cathedral and the possession Mass at 11:00 in the seminario menor. The Tapachula vacancy administrator was the priest Agripino Méndez Víctorio, not a bishop, so no administration tenure arises for López Alfaro. In the CEM he was suplente for the Chiapas province on the Permanent Council in the June 2023 directorio, and a member of the Permanent Council for the Chiapas province for the triennium 2024-2027 (titular or suplente unspecified); he holds no 2024-2027 CEM commission or dimension (checked-and-absent).

As auxiliary he marched on 5 July 2023 with a mainly Tzotzil Altos contingent and criticised a 'vacío de autoridad' permitting shootings, deaths, unpunished criminals and a fearful citizenry; that advocacy is bio prose, never a controversy. As Tapachula ordinary he headed the 28 September 2025 procession opening the Semana del migrante y del refugiado with stranded migrants, and in October 2026 his diocese joined the ACN world prayer campaign for persecuted Christians (15-22 November), with a closing call to the intercession of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. He was still Bishop of Tapachula at as_of.
