The Life

Manuel Aurelio Cruz was born on December 2, 1953, in Havana, Cuba, to Juan and Caridad Cruz, and fled to the United States with his parents in 1966 to escape the revolution, settling in Union City, New Jersey. As a young man he spent eight years on the emergency-room staff of Saint James Hospital in Newark. He earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy and a master of arts in Sacred Scripture at Seton Hall University and studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark on May 31, 1980, the first Cuban-born priest ordained in the archdiocese.

After ordination he served as parochial vicar at Holy Rosary Parish in Elizabeth and, from 1982, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark. He served on the archdiocesan Vocations Committee and as a dean in the early 1990s. Since 1995 he has been a faculty member in laboratory medicine and pathology at New Jersey Medical School, and in 2005 Archbishop John J. Myers named him vice president for Mission and Ministry for Catholic Health and Human Services.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him an auxiliary bishop of Newark on June 9, 2008, assigning him the titular see of Gaguari, and he was consecrated on September 8, 2008, by Archbishop Myers. He served as rector of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart until Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin reorganized the auxiliaries as regional bishops in 2020, when Cruz was reassigned to Essex County. In January 2017 he was punched at the altar during Mass at the cathedral and taken to hospital with injuries described as not serious. His motto is Caritas.

Newark2008-09-08 – presentauxiliaryNo act of his own
What he inheritedCruz was appointed auxiliary bishop on 2008-06-09 and consecrated on 2008-09-08, so he was already an auxiliary when Traditionis custodes was issued on 2021-07-16, serving under Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, who governs liturgical policy for the Archdiocese of Newark. No decree, permission, dispensation request, or appointment sustaining the 1962 Missal in Cruz's own name was found in archdiocesan news, USCCB releases, or reputable reporting. Acts of the ordinary are not attributed to an auxiliary, so no archdiocesan site count is asserted for this tenure. A 2026 archdiocesan statement on the Society of Saint Pius X and its listed pre-1970 liturgy options is Tobin's, not Cruz's, and is not counted as a Cruz act.
Since the SSPX decree of 2 July 2026: No statement recorded as of 2026-10-24.

Domus Dei’s Verdict
The Bishop & the Mass of Ages
No governing act of his own found

No governing act of Bishop Cruz's own on the 1962 Missal was found. He has issued no decree, granted no permission, sought no dispensation, and made no appointment sustaining the older form that this research could verify, so his posture is no_record. Liturgical governance for the Archdiocese of Newark rests with its ordinary, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, and Tobin's acts are Tobin's, not Cruz's.

Cruz was already an auxiliary bishop when Traditionis custodes was issued on July 16, 2021, and has served through the whole TC era to date, latterly as regional bishop for Essex County. Neither his regional role nor his earlier cathedral rectorship produced a 1962-Missal act in his name in archdiocesan news, USCCB releases, or reputable reporting searched for this dossier, and a 2026 archdiocesan statement on the Society of Saint Pius X is Tobin's statement, not his.

Accordingly no site count is asserted for this tenure, no society is listed, and no decree or dispensation is recorded. The verdict would change only on a verified act of Cruz's own - a permission, decree, dispensation request, or sustaining appointment in his name - and none was found after targeted searching, as the research note records.
