Margarito Salazar Cárdenas
Margarito Salazar Cárdenas was born on 22 February 1958 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, the sixth of eleven children of Ezequiel Salazar Domínguez and Conrada Cárdenas Trujillo. He entered the Seminary of Matamoros in 1978 and studied at the Universidad Pontificia de México from 1985 to 1988, taking the licentiate in Dogmatic Theology in 1990. He was ordained a deacon on 11 June 1988 and a priest on 12 June 1989 by Sabás Magaña García, incardinated for Matamoros. The whole of this paragraph rests on Spanish Wikipedia: no Holy See bulletin for either of his episcopal appointments was located in search, and no bulletin URL is constructed here.
As a priest he served as formator of the Minor Seminary of Matamoros from 1990 to 1997; as parish priest of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Valle Hermoso, from 1997 to 1998; as rector of the Major Seminary of Matamoros from 1998 to 2007; as parish priest of Nuestra Señora del Refugio, Matamoros Cathedral, from 2007 to 2015; again as rector of the Major Seminary from 2015 to 2017; and as parish priest of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Matamoros, from 2017 to 2018; he is also listed generally as teacher, vice-rector, diocesan Vocational Pastoral coordinator, and parochial vicar. In the Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano he is listed as Titular of the Permanent Council for the Province of San Luis Potosí for the triennia 2018-2021 and 2021-2024, and as First Vocal for Interreligious Dialogue and Communion for the triennia 2021-2024 and 2024-2027. All of the offices and conference roles in this paragraph are likewise Spanish-Wikipedia-only and are not independently corroborated in an opened primary source.
Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Matehuala on 3 March 2018, and he received episcopal ordination and began his episcopal ministry on 24 May 2018; the consecrator named by Spanish Wikipedia is Jesús Carlos Cabrero Romero, and a Matehuala possession ceremony distinct from the consecration is not separately established. Pope Leo XIV appointed him Bishop of Tampico on 6 February 2026, and he took possession in Tampico on 9 April 2026. The possession date is corroborated by Spanish Wikipedia and by the Milenio Tamaulipas front page of 10 April 2026, reporting that he received the crosier to lead the Diocese of Tampico; the roster's cited VC Noticias / Revista Navegando April 2026 possession report was not opened, and Catholic-Hierarchy was not consulted for him in this run. The venue wording is unresolved: Spanish Wikipedia places the possession event at the Centro de Convenciones de Ciudad Madero, while the roster describes a canonical act at 10:00 in Tampico Cathedral and a solemn Mass at the Domo, Ciudad Madero; the two may be parts of one day's ceremonies, and no single venue claim is merged here. Spanish Wikipedia adds that he celebrated his first Mass as Bishop of Tampico on 12 April 2026, Divine Mercy Sunday. His predecessor at Tampico, José Armando Álvarez Cano, became Archbishop of Morelia in January 2026.
