Marvyn Abrea Maceda
Marvyn Abrea Maceda was born on February 11, 1969, in Biliran, in the Diocese of Naval. He studied philosophy at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Palo, Leyte, and theology at San Jose Seminary, Ateneo de Manila, in Quezon City. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1996, for the Diocese of Naval. His posts included parish priest of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Mission and diocesan director for youth from 1996 to 2000, diocesan bursar and financial administrator from 1996 to 2007, chancellor from 1996 to 2010, service at St. Roch Mission Chapel from 2000 and then at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Mission Chapel in Naval, diocesan director of Basic Ecclesial Communities from 2006 to 2010, a sabbatical at Our Lady of the Philippines Trappist Monastery in Jordan, Guimaras, from 2010 to 2011, moderator of the group of ordained ministers and BEC pastoral director of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception parish from 2011 to 2017, Vicar General of Naval, membership in the Presbyteral Council and Board of Consultors, and director of the Naval Commission on Clergy in 2018.
On January 7, 2019, he was appointed the fifth Bishop of San Jose de Antique, succeeding Jose Romeo Lazo, who had been transferred to Jaro in February 2018; he was the first bishop of the diocese drawn from Naval itself, the diocese having been created in 1988. He was consecrated on April 2, 2019, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Naval, with Archbishop John F. Du of Palo as principal consecrator, assisted by Bishop Rex Ramirez of Naval and retired Bishop Filomeno Bactol, with Nuncio Gabriele Giordano Caccia and Cardinal Tagle witnessing. He was installed on April 9, 2019, at St. Joseph Cathedral in San Jose, the installation led by his predecessor Lazo. The diocese at his installation counted about 54 priests, more than 80 religious women, and 25 parishes.
In the window, his strongest individual act is the October 4, 2026 pastoral appeal for a just transition for Semirara Island, following a peaceful residents' gathering there on September 25, 2026, with the island's coal operating contract expiring in 2027. The appeal is an act of social advocacy, not liturgical governance, and no governing act of his own concerning the 1962 Missal was found.
