Michael G. McGovern
Michael George McGovern was born July 1, 1964, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and grew up in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood. He was educated at the Jesuit-run St. Ignatius College Prep and at Loyola University Chicago (B.A. Philosophy), then formed for the priesthood at Mundelein Seminary (M.Div. 1994). Cardinal Joseph Bernardin ordained him a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 21, 1994.
As a Chicago priest he served as pastor of St. Mary in Lake Forest (2004) and St. Raphael the Archangel (2016). He briefly entered the Jesuit novitiate in 2002 before returning to diocesan ministry. Pope Francis named him the ninth Bishop of Belleville, Illinois, and he was installed there on July 22, 2020.
On March 31, 2025, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Archbishop George J. Lucas and appointed McGovern the sixth Archbishop of Omaha. He was installed at the Cathedral of St. Cecilia in Omaha on May 7, 2025. His episcopal motto is 'Vos Autem Dixi Amicos' (I have called you friends), from John 15:15.
Omaha is a genuinely TLM-favorable see, and importantly this predates both Lucas and McGovern. The Traditional Latin Mass in Omaha is anchored by Immaculate Conception Church, a diocesan parish entrusted to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. That entrustment came from Archbishop Elden Curtiss (parish care given to the FSSP in 2007-2009) -- NOT from Lucas or McGovern. It today offers a full daily and Sunday TLM schedule including a Sunday Sung Mass. Note: the FSSP's international headquarters and seminary at Denton, NE are in the neighboring Diocese of Lincoln, but the FSSP also runs this Omaha parish.
On Traditionis Custodes (July 2021), the restriction fell during Archbishop George Lucas's tenure, and Lucas handled it permissively: no TLM locations in Omaha were suppressed, and per the traditioniscustodes.info record the only modification was that the Epistle and Gospel would additionally be read in English at public Masses. That is Lucas's act and Lucas's mildness -- McGovern inherited it intact. McGovern's own record on the TLM as archbishop is, so far, a blank page: no decree tightening or loosening the Latin Mass, ad orientem, altar rails, or sacramental practice has surfaced as of mid-2026.
What we do have from McGovern is temperamental, not juridical. His Jan. 2026 America Magazine remarks treat young Catholics' draw to tradition sympathetically and express curiosity -- 'I'd like to know more about what... they are looking for' -- while steering toward 'a good presentation of the Eucharist.' That is an open, pastoral posture, neither hostile nor committed. Combined with his Francis appointment and Jesuit formation, the honest read is: he inherited a stable, FSSP-served TLM community and has left it alone. Friends of the old Mass in Omaha are, for now, secure by inheritance rather than by any affirmative McGovern act -- hence too early to judge, with the practical situation on the ground remaining favorable.
