Pedro Bismarck Chau
Pedro Bismarck Chau was born on June 28, 1967, in Managua, Nicaragua, the youngest of seven children. As a teenager he left Nicaragua alone and settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he worked in a clothing factory and suffered a period of depression. He later studied English at LaGuardia Community College, earned a high-school equivalency diploma, worked on Catholic retreat programs and their music, and served on the national youth committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. He earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from Seton Hall University in 2004.
He studied theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark on May 24, 2008. He served as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Virgin in Garfield from 2008 to 2012, then in archdiocesan youth ministry and vocations work from 2012 to 2015. From 2015 to 2020 he was campus minister at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and at Rutgers University in Newark, while also pastoring Saint John Church and Saint Patrick Pro-Cathedral. He earned a master's in professional counseling from Seton Hall in 2021 and became rector of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in 2020.
Pope Francis chose him as an auxiliary bishop of Newark in April 2025, and Pope Leo XIV formalized the appointment on May 30, 2025. He was consecrated at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart on September 8, 2025, by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, becoming the first Nicaraguan-born bishop in the United States. He serves as regional bishop for Hudson County and is fluent in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. His motto is Dios es mi fuerza, God is my strength.
No governing act of Bishop Chau's own on the 1962 Missal was found. He has issued no decree, granted no permission, sought no dispensation, and made no appointment sustaining the older form that this research could verify, so his posture is no_record. Liturgical governance for the Archdiocese of Newark rests with its ordinary, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, and Tobin's acts are Tobin's, not Chau's.
Chau became an auxiliary bishop only in September 2025, more than four years after Traditionis custodes, and his public profile since then is Hudson County regional ministry, youth and campus work, and cathedral rectorship before it. None of that produced a 1962-Missal act in his name in archdiocesan news, USCCB releases, or reputable reporting searched for this dossier, and his short episcopal tenure is itself a reason to expect a thin record rather than to infer one.
Accordingly no site count is asserted for this tenure, no society is listed, and no decree or dispensation is recorded. The verdict would change only on a verified act of Chau's own - a permission, decree, dispensation request, or sustaining appointment in his name - and none was found after targeted searching, as the research note records.
