The Life

Prudencio Padilla Andaya Jr., CICM, was born January 2, 1959, in Lubuagan. He studied at Maryhurst Seminary from 1975 to 1977 and at St. Louis University from 1977 to 1979, studied French in Belgium from 1980 to 1983, and spent a Zambia internship from 1984 to 1986, where he learned Bemba. He is fluent in English, Tagalog, Iloko, and French. His episcopal motto is Caritas Christi Urget Nos, 'The Love of Christ, Impels Us'.

He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1986, and served in Zambia for 11 years, as assistant parish priest and then head parish priest of Kapisha Parish (head by 1989), and as District Superior of CICM Zambia from 1991 to 1997. In 1998 he returned to the Philippines to serve as Socius and Novice Master at the CICM Novitiate in Taytay, Rizal, as Socius from 1998 and Director of Novices from 1999 to 2003.

Pope John Paul II appointed him the second Apostolic Vicar of Tabuk on April 16, 2003, and he was ordained and installed as bishop on July 16, 2003. Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Cabanatuan on December 8, 2024, succeeding Sofronio Bancud, whose resignation was accepted the same day, Bancud's 76th birthday, after nearly two decades shepherding the diocese since January 2005. Andaya is the diocese's sixth bishop, overseeing over 1.2 million Catholics in 30 parishes spanning 15 towns and the cities of Palayan and Gapan. He was installed on February 3, 2025, with Apostolic Nuncio Charles John Brown as installing prelate and Archbishop Socrates Villegas as homilist.
