The Life

Ramón Salazar Estrada was born on 17 May 1963 in Guadalajara. He studied for the priesthood at the seminary of Guadalajara and was ordained a priest on 30 May 1993, incardinated in the metropolitan archdiocese of Guadalajara; Spanish Wikipedia names Bishop José Guadalupe Martín Rábago as his ordaining bishop and Guadalajara as the place, neither of which is stated in the Holy See bulletins. He took the licentiate in moral theology at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome (1993-1995) and the doctorate there (2000-2002), and knows Italian, German, and Latin besides Spanish.

As a priest he served as chaplain of the Monastery of the Perpetual Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament (1996-1997), spiritual director of the minor seminary and lecturer in moral theology at the major seminary of Guadalajara (1996-1999), prefect of the auxiliary seminary of Guadalajara (1996-2000), chaplain of the Handmaids of the Lord of Mercy (1997-1999), chaplain of Sankt Cäcilia, Bonn-Oberkassel, Germany (2001), parish vicar of La Purificación de María (2003), lecturer in social morality at the major seminary (2003-2005), parish priest of María Reina de México (2003-2004), chaplain of the Colegio Cervantes (2004-2013), lecturer in Latin at the minor and major seminaries (2004-2021), spiritual director of the minor seminary (2005-2006), spiritual director of the Institute for Adult Vocations (2006-2015), lecturer in moral theology at the major seminary (2011-2021), chaplain of the Claretian Missionary Sisters (2013-2015), and lecturer in social morality at the major seminary (2014-2017); from 2015 he was spiritual director of the major seminary of Guadalajara and chaplain in a rest home. The 2021 bulletin states that he has published several articles regarding moral theology; no titles, journals, or dates are given, so no article is listed as a work.

Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Bisarcio and auxiliary bishop of Guadalajara on 18 September 2021, at which time he was spiritual director and lecturer at the major seminary and chaplain in a rest home. He received episcopal ordination on 30 November 2021 in the Santuario de los Mártires de Cristo Rey, Tlaquepaque; Spanish Wikipedia names Cardinal Robles Ortega as his consecrator, which no bulletin states. Within the Episcopal Conference of Mexico he has been responsible for the Episcopal Dimension for Life since 2024. Pope Leo XIV appointed him bishop of Mazatlán on 29 September 2026, accepting the resignation of Mario Espinosa Contreras; he was still styled bishop-elect of Mazatlán on 12 October 2026, when he preached the farewell Mass of Our Lady of Zapopan in Guadalajara Cathedral (see Quotes), and no Mazatlán possession date had been established as of 28 October 2026, so no Mazatlán tenure is coded in this dossier. The appointment is recorded here and the tenure will open on the possession date when it is established.

What he inheritedNo decree, permission, restriction, celebration, or statement by him concerning the 1962 Missal was found, in his Guadalajara auxiliary tenure (2021-2026) or in the 29 September to 28 October 2026 Mazatlán appointment window. The 21 September 2021 Guadalajara decree is Cardinal Robles Ortega's act; it predates Salazar Estrada's episcopal consecration (30 November 2021) by more than two months, and as an auxiliary he does not promulgate diocesan provisions in any case. His Latin lectureship and knowledge of Latin are formation and language facts, not evidence of a position on the 1962 Missal. The Mazatlán tenure is not coded: no possession date had been established as of 28 October 2026 (he was still bishop-elect on 12 October 2026); it will open on the possession date when established.
Since the SSPX decree of 2 July 2026: No statement recorded as of 2026-10-28.
