The Life

Roberto Orendain Gaa was born October 4, 1962, in Manila, to Agapito Gaa and Priscila Orendain. He attended the Ateneo from 1968 to 1980, earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman, studied philosophy and theology at San Carlos Graduate School of Theology in Makati, and obtained a licentiate in spirituality from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 2003 to 2005. His episcopal motto is Finem Fidei Salutem Animarum, 'The result of faith, the salvation of souls' (1 Peter 1:9).

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Manila on September 23, 2000, by Jaime Cardinal Sin. He served as parochial vicar at Saint John the Baptist, Immaculate Conception, Presentation of the Child Jesus, and Saint Anthony of Padua parishes, and as parish priest of Holy Spirit Parish in Caloocan City from 2002 to 2003. From 2003 he served at Holy Apostles Senior Seminary in Makati City as spiritual director and dean of studies, was appointed rector of the seminary in 2008, and became a member of the Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Manila. He held no prior episcopal tenure; he came to Novaliches straight from the seminary rectorship.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Novaliches on June 6, 2019, following the retirement of Antonio Tobias. He was consecrated on August 22, 2019, at the Manila Cathedral by Luis Antonio Tagle, with Socrates Villegas and Mylo Hubert Vergara as co-consecrators, and installed on August 24, 2019, at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd in Novaliches, as the diocese's third bishop.
