Sigifredo Noriega Barceló
Sigifredo Noriega Barceló was born in Granados, Sonora, on 12 October 1951. He entered the seminary of Ciudad Obregón in 1963, studied humanities there, studied philosophy at the Pontifical Seminary of Montezuma in New Mexico in 1968, and studied theology at the diocesan seminary of Tijuana from 1972. He was ordained a priest on 7 October 1976 in Granados for Ciudad Obregón. He went to Rome in 1980 and obtained a licentiate in moral theology from the Alphonsian Academy, the Spanish Wikipedia giving the degree as Licencia Docendi. On his return in 1982 he was spiritual director to 1991; in 2001 he was parish priest of San Isidro Labrador in Providencia, Sonora; from 2001 to 2006 he was spiritual director of theology, spirituality coordinator, and prefect of studies of the Ciudad Obregón major seminary; and he was vicar general on 12 April 2006 by the Spanish Wikipedia account, and in 2006-2007 by the Vatican Information Service biography. His offices were parish priest, spiritual director, vice-rector of the minor seminary, prefect of studies of the major seminary, diocesan vocations promoter, member of the Presbyteral Council, member of the College of Consultors, member of the La Salle University council of administration, and family-pastoral assessor.
He was appointed first bishop of Ensenada on 26 January 2007 and received episcopal ordination on 25 April 2007. The diocese of Ensenada was erected on 27 January 2007 by the bull Venerabiles Fratres, AAS 99 (2007) pages 316-317, suffragan of Tijuana, with its cathedral at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe; the appointment was announced on 26 January, a one-day variant against the erection date, noted here only. No distinct Ensenada installation was found, so that tenure codes from consecration. His successor at Ensenada was Rafael Valdez Torres, from 21 May 2013; the see was vacant from August 2012 to May 2013, and no vacancy administrator is established or coded. He was appointed bishop of Zacatecas on 2 August 2012 and took possession on 2 October 2012. His predecessor was Jesús Carlos Cabrero Romero (2008-2012, appointed to San Luis Potosí). The diocese of Zacatecas was erected on 26 January 1863, is suffragan of San Luis Potosí, of Guadalajara only until 25 November 2006, and has its cathedral at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption. He has been a member of the CEM Permanent Council since 2009, a conference office and background only. His pastoral focus, as Página 24 presents it, is accompaniment of communities, formation of pastoral agents, evangelization, families, priestly vocations, consecrated life, and a more fraternal, just, and peaceful society. His consecrator is blank: the Catholic-Hierarchy lineage head, Rafael Romo Muñoz of Tijuana, is not labelled principal, and the venue is unestablished.
In October 2026, on reaching 75, he submitted his resignation to the Holy See; his letter to the people of Zacatecas, dated 15 October 2026, says he sent it days earlier and awaits the Holy See's response. Presentation is not acceptance: he continues at the head of the diocese, no successor has been designated, and the Zacatecas tenure is not closed at the letter date. It will close at his successor's possession when the Holy See accepts the resignation, as pending maintenance on this dossier.
