Socrates Calamba Mesiona
Socrates Calamba Mesiona was born on September 17, 1963, in Tagbilaran, Bohol. A priest of the Mission Society of the Philippines, he studied philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary from 1980 to 1984 and theology at the Divine Word School of Theology from 1984 to 1989, and earned a licentiate in missiology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1994 to 1996. He was ordained a priest on April 14, 1989.
As a priest he was school director of the Fil-mission Seminary from 1989 to 1991, parish priest of Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish in Mandaluyong City (Hulo) from 1991 to 1994, rector of the Fil-mission Seminary in Tagaytay from 1996 to 1999, general treasurer and council member of the Mission Society of the Philippines from 1999 to 2004, Superior General of the congregation from 2004 to 2009, and National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Philippines from 2009. He chaired the Episcopal Commission on Mission of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines in 2020. He was a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples from July 14, 2014 to July 14, 2019, and was reappointed for a second term running from October 13, 2020, on a letter from Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the congregation, dated November 20, 2020.
On October 28, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Princesa, with the titular see of Budva, succeeding Bishop Arigo. He was consecrated and installed on February 10, 2017, the same day, so the dossier matches the roster's possession basis despite the same-day consecration. The consecrators and the consecration venue rest on Wikipedia alone, citing a domain-blocked CBCP News piece, and are not stated as confirmed in this dossier; Wikipedia's 'Budua' for the titular see is wrong, and Fides governs.
