Motto: Utinam dirigantur viae meae ad custodiendas ("O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping Thy statutes") Subject of the Duchy of Milan. Member of the Dominican Order, with the religious name Michele. Excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England. Issued the 1570 Roman Missal. Battle of Lepanto (1571); instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory.
