Hæc quotiescúmque fecéritis, in mei memóriam faciétis.
Amen.
We therefore humbly pray and beseech thee, most merciful Father, through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, that thou wouldst vouchsafe to accept and bless these gifts, these presents, these holy unspotted sacrifices, which in the first place we offer thee for thy holy Catholic Church.
Be mindful, O Lord, of thy servants and handmaids, and of all here present, whose faith and devotion are known unto thee, for whom we offer, or who offer up to thee, this sacrifice of praise.
Communicating with, and honouring the memory, in the first place, of the glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ: as also of blessed Joseph her Spouse, and of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul, Andrew, and of all thy Saints.
We therefore beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept this oblation of our service, and that of thy whole family: dispose our days in thy peace, and command that we be delivered from eternal damnation, and numbered in the flock of thine elect.
Which oblation do thou, O God, vouchsafe in all respects to make blessed, approved, ratified, reasonable, and acceptable: that it may become for us the Body and Blood of thy most beloved Son our Lord Jesus Christ.
Who, the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with his eyes lifted up to heaven, unto thee, O God, his Father almighty, giving thanks to thee, blessed, broke, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat ye all of this: FOR THIS IS MY BODY.
In like manner, after he had supped, taking also this excellent chalice into his holy and venerable hands, and giving thanks to thee, he blessed and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and drink ye all of this: FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL TESTAMENT: THE MYSTERY OF FAITH: WHICH SHALL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY UNTO THE REMISSION OF SINS. As often as ye shall do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance of me.
Wherefore, O Lord, we thy servants, and thy holy people, calling to mind the blessed Passion of the same Christ thy Son our Lord, his Resurrection from the dead, and glorious Ascension into heaven: offer unto thy most excellent Majesty, of thy gifts bestowed upon us, a pure Victim, a holy Victim, an unspotted Victim.
To us also thy sinful servants, who hope in the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs.
Through him, and with him, and in him, is to thee, God the Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory. World without end. Amen.
The Roman Canon is the ancient Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman Rite — the great prayer of thanksgiving and offering within which the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. For some fourteen centuries it was the only Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman Church, and in the traditional Mass it is prayed by the priest in near silence, the people kneeling in adoration.
Its roots are very old: St. Ambrose of Milan quotes the prayer over the bread almost word for word around the years 390–400, and by the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great (c. 600) the Canon stood essentially as we have it — Gregory himself is credited with a final touch. Its shape is a series of prayers: the offering (Te igitur), remembrance of the living, the litany of saints (Communicantes), the plea over the gifts, the Consecration in the very words of Christ, the memorial of his Passion and Resurrection, remembrance of the dead, a second litany of saints (Nobis quoque), and the great doxology Per ipsum.
At its heart are the words of Consecration, spoken by the priest in the person of Christ: "This is my Body… This is the Chalice of my Blood." At each, the priest genuflects in adoration, elevates the Sacred Host and the Chalice, and the bells are rung. In the reform of 1969 the Roman Canon was retained as Eucharistic Prayer I, now one option among several; in the traditional Mass it remains the one Canon, unbroken since antiquity.
